GENTLE "HANDS-ON" MANIPULATION

The term "adjustment" refers to the gentle hands-on manipulation techniques that are used to improve the gliding and positioning of any misaligned vertebrae. The term "subluxation" is used to describe a vertebrae out of its normal position causing nerve root pressure.

The objective of the "adjustment" is to remove the subluxation and restore normal vertebral gliding. Chronic abnormal gliding of subluxated vertebrae creates chronic irritation and inflammation which causes pain and creates osteoarthritis.

The "adjustment" performed by the chiropractor or osteopath can re-establish normal vertebral gliding and positioning. This is essential as a locked vertebral segment causes the vertebrae above and below to overwork. Over-worked vertebrae often develop mechanical osteoarthritis, inflammation and nerve root pressure which all create pain.

When vertebrae are moved or adjusted there may be, but not always, an audible sound. This is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide from the locked joint. The sensation is typically relieving. However, if a patient is aprehensive to the maneuver, a variety of other methods can be used to establish movement and alignment of the vertberae.

Strains and sprains can also create subluxated vertabrae. Although the symptoms of a subluxation can be felt right away, in many cases the symptoms may not reveal themselves for weeks or months.

We know that any misaligned vertebrae or locked joint is an unhealthy joint. Left untreated, degenerative changes are almost certain to follow. We never advise a patient to let a misaligned or locked vertebrae heal crooked. Improper or "crooked" healing results in a wide variety of avoidable conditions including spinal arthritis.
